PR is an insurance policy for your brand.

You Had One Job, United. One Job.

Let's go back to my college class, where we learned about crisis communications.

There's a certain way to communicate to the masses during times of chaos. It takes time, patience and careful planning to craft messages that soothe, but still get your point across. You have to consider the tone, the word usage, the medium you use to convey such a message and even the person who will be communicating.

Having a professionally crafted crisis communications plan is like an insurance policy of sorts.

If you're in good hands, it can protect your brand from mayhem.

Blue Bell, BP and Tylenol are examples of companies that were able to rescue their brands from an untimely death due to good crisis communications plans, from a good PR team.

United, however, has missed the boat several times.

United Airlines Social PR blunders:

  1. An Extra Employee a Day keeps the Doctor Away. This video is most recent. The doctor's devotion to his sickly patients caused him to be roughed up like a criminal. This man was dragged off the plane like a 2-year-old at Target. It was sad.

  2. Leggings Don't Fly Everyone has heard about the teenage girls who were kicked off the plane for wearing leggings. When the lovely people of Twitter got wind of the situation, things got heated. United dropped the ball, yet again. Read the tweets here.

  3. United Throws Guitars by Dave Carroll In 2013, Dave Carroll was traveling with his band and his $3,500 guitar. After landing, he looked out the window just in time to see his guitar flying in the air, among other luggage. After several attempts to contact United to no prevail, he decided to use his talents to gain attention to the problem.

The point of it all is to always be prepared. Know where you want to go and get there, with your plan in hand. If you are well-prepared, nothing and no one can stop you. As a business owner, your brand is your money maker, Why would you leave it unprotected?
